Borrowed picture from The DASH Ensemble. Here: Lilja in action.
The Dash var helt klart bast.
Last night, Jim and I went to Brooklyn. We wanted to find some good place to eat, but the place which seemed good served no food until 6pm (!!), so we went to an Irish bar that had really great and cheaper appetizers.
After that we went to the Actors Fund Arts Center. Last night was the professional companies, the other evenings at the Brooklyn Dance Festival are the emerging artists. I know dancers in both Arch Dance and The Dash Ensemble that performed yesterday.
It is always interesting to go see dance here. Much of it is pure crap. But I had an open mind about last night because it was already well-known choreographers. The Dash was clearly best. Good use of the room, the clothes, togetherness between the dancers, yes, that was interesting to me. The last number was a tap dance number. I’ve never seen tap-dance on stage that I’ve thought were interesting until yesterday. It’s a hard dance to catch the audience with, but this group, Jason Samuels Smith & Company, looked like they had fun and gave the audience a truly professional tap dance.
One company, SynthesisDance, was so tremendously bad that I dozed off a couple times. Boring costumes, predictable, monotonous and dull music, poor with the lighting and the dancers looked like they wanted kill us even though it was supposed to be a “beautiful” dance. The dance was a total show-off: “Look at my flexible legs, and here you can see it again. Split. I’m flexible and I can dance”. Ugh, it was so bad. The great disappointment was that the same company came back and danced again after a short pause. The choreography was a liiiittle better, but no, not good! But maybe it’s good to see pure crap sometimes so that you can appreciate what is good. I don’t know.
