Go out and smell the roses, but then…Stay at Home, damn it

March 27, 2020

Good Morning! How’s isolation life? We are doing pretty good. Mr Grumpy isn’t too happy about the whole social distancing thing but at least he gets to go for long walks and he can snuggle us basically all day if he wants to. I wish we could tell our dogs what is going on in the world right now and that they would understand us.

Most parks are still open which is great, we should all enjoy the outside as much as we can, soak up as much vitamins as possible.
Yesterday after my sister sent a snapchat of her walk by the ocean I felt that maybe I should go for a long walk myself down to the water here. I searched on google maps to see how long it says it takes to walk to the beach park we sometimes drive to. About an hour it said, so not that bad. But, then I saw that it said it is currently closed until after Sunday and my guess is that it will keep being closed after that. That’s a park that a lot of huge families have bbq’s whenever it’s nice weather so I guess the city decided to close it down to avoid big gatherings (I also think that’s the park they have dedicated for testings). Bummer, I’m craving some time by the ocean.

We have to stay at least 6 feet apart from others, which people actually do here, everyone is crossing the street if they can when meeting someone else out walking, and if that is not safe then people are walking on the very edge of the sidewalks to avoid each other. We don’t say hi to neighbors or other dog owners and their dogs, we don’t interact with anyone. I never ever touch the elevator buttons with my hands, instead I wear a jacket and use my elbow and I only go in and out of the building using the doors that opens away from me so that I can use the side or back of my body to push. Right when we come in after taking Thor out, we take jackets off and wash our hands (I always sing Britney Spears “Oops I did it again” which should be enough time to wash hands properly) before we do anything else. Door handles, light switches, counters and sleeves of our jackets are wiped off regularly. We really do try to be careful. If (or rather when) we hear that someone in our building is sick, then we plan on never leaving the apartment and teach Thor to do his business on our terrace. Super disgusting but that’s if we really have to.

The virus is spreading like crazy here in America now and people die like flies. We are ordered to stay at home but I don’t think everyone is following that. Plus, you can walk around with the virus for 2-14 days or even up to 24 days I heard back in January, so there will for sure be a lot more people getting sick over the next weeks.
For some reason they don’t even test people in Sweden unless they are really sick and need emergency care. From everything I read and hear about Sweden, to me it sounds like my country is in some sort of denial and that scares me, I have a lot of people I care about over there, of all ages. In a way I think it’s smart to not test everyone cause well then tests will run out and hospitals will be over crowded. Everyone doesn’t have to know that they have the virus, but everyone should just assume they probably do or probably will. So if the country doesn’t want to test everyone, fine, but then they should at least order everyone to stay at home. I keep hearing of business running like normal, people still go to fitness classes and I see pictures of people hanging out at cafes and playgrounds. Since they don’t do many tests, the overall number will stay the same and people will think that the country is doing fine…but it’s not. No country is doing fine.

We should not be scared of corona, unless we are at risk. We shouldn’t worry about dying, that sort of worry creates chaos among people. But we should care about it, we should stay updated about it, we should wash our damn hands and cover our mouths when we cough and we should stay at home and practice social distancing because there are many people at risk and we care about them!

If you can and are allowed to, go for a walk and enjoy the outside, it’s good for us. But other than that, Stay at Home!

one month at home

March 26, 2020

One month of distancing and isolating🏡
Not because I have the virus, but because I did not want to get it and then accidentally give it to someone at risk (you can after all carry it around for 2-14 days or longer without knowing you have it). And my husband has been working from home for almost three weeks now.
We live in between retirement homes, a hospital and lots of other practices, so for 31 days we wanted to keep our distance and try to be smart ahead of time.
We are Not running out of toilet paper🧻 (not even close, I dont understand why people are freaking out about that) and as far as we know, we don’t have the virus but we are Staying at Home and we are washing our hands

cooking and cutting

March 23, 2020

Just like every year when you think that the spring is near, you wake up and…. it’s snowing * Too warm for any snow to stay on the ground, so far at least. Seems like it’s gonna stay cold and wet all week. We are ordered to stay at home so in a way it doesn’t matter much, but I know that Thor won’t enjoy that and I have come to like the long walks I do without T when I talk to my sister. We are “hanging out” almost every day now, she is out walking with Mila sleeping in the stroller and I am walking around the neighborhoods of Stamford.

I know that most people cook every meal at home, but Jim and I don’t, so this whole quarantine thing for the past four weeks has been quite a change for us:) J eats lunch at work every weekday and I cook something small for myself, at night we usually eat some easy snack and then on weekends we mostly eat out. We eat out 2-4 days a week together, and now we eat every meal at home in the company of each other. I have tried to be smart about the food we have at home so we don’t run out on some things and then just sit there with like rice and chia seed to make a meal out of hahah. I have no eggs at home so baking is a bit of a challenge but I try to be creative and google has been of huge help:)

Yesterday I made pizzas for lunch. Super easy. Flour, salt, baking powder, olive oil and water with tomato sauce, cheese and basil for topping. Took maybe 15 minutes in total to make. The pizzas ended up a minute too long in the oven though and was a bit burned, but still tasted fine. The reason for that was that I cut my finger quite deep on the tomato sauce can when cleaning up while pizzas were in the oven and at the same time Thor needed to go out (he drinks a lot more water these days because of his bladder stones) so J had to just run around and try to take care of everything as I was holding my hand over my head trying to get the bleeding to stop. J put some extra cheese on them after he took them out so they wouldn’t be so dry. Super simple and quick lunch, fine for a Sunday.

My finger is fine now. Normally I would probably slap on a bandage and then not care, but since I really don’t wanna go and take up space at hospitals these days, I really wanted to make sure it didn’t need stitches or get infected. I rinsed with alcohol, used some neosporin (that shit is magic) and then put a bandage on while keeping some pressure holding my hand high, and today it looks nice. Still hurts and I feel a bit handicapped – you don’t know how much you use a finger in your daily life until you get hurt. I have realized that the middle finger on my right hand is the number one I use for strength, couldn’t even squeeze the water out of my hair after shower this morning, it’s like the other fingers just forgot how to be fingers and my left hand is completely useless hahah. Typing now is kinda strange as well.

I hope you all are doing ok while staying at home. Weird times now, but we’ll get through it. Happy thoughts, socializing with loved ones or friends over the phone, keeping active and creative is important. Just watching TV all day while snacking and not talking to anyone will make anyone depressed so I hope you take this time as an opportunity to get things done in your home or work on something you didn’t have time for before:)

First Day of Spring

March 20, 2020

Last night I got another text and a phone call from the Major in our city. The message said that basically everything will be closed from now on. They will however keep the parks and beaches open but no gatherings of more than 10 people.
Fresh air and walks outside are always a good idea especially in a crisis like this (unless you actually know that you have the virus, then please stay inside!)
If you do go out, just be aware, be careful, keep your distance and be respectful of others.
Happy Spring Everyone🧡

changing Thor’s diet

March 17, 2020

The vet finally called yesterday around 6pm. Thor’s pH was 8 which means it’s high enough that there is a chance that a change in his diet can help him pass the stones himself (closer to 6.5 or below and he would have needed surgery right away). So no surgery for now, yay! What a relief! We will try the new food for a month and then new x-rays. But of course we will have to keep a close eye on him and if he starts to have problems doing his business then we need to take him to the emergency for surgery right away cause that probably would mean that a stone is stuck. Poor baby, he doesn’t even know he has them. He is acting normal and doesn’t seem to be in any pain which is great, but we noticed when we took him on longer walks this weekend that he struggled a bit in the end. My guess is that it’s like a uti, he think he has to pee but nothing comes out and that probably hurts. No more blood though so that’s good. So for now we will have to keep his walks shorter which he won’t be happy about. We are taking everything fun away from him – no running on our slippery floors at home, no running up n down the stairs, no long walks and no interactions with people. But he’ll get over it…hopefully:)

Our vet told us that they wouldn’t be able to get that kind of food he now needs until maybe the end of this week or possibly next week because people have been hoarding pet food. So after speaking to the vet our search began to find a place that had it in stock. Luckily PetSmart in Stamford had it so we took Thor there and picked some cans up. The floor was so slippery there though (makes no sense why a pet store would have such slippery floor) so I couldn’t put T down to walk around and he was not a happy camper. But once he saw that daddy had picked out a new toy for him he was back to happy again. He was squeaking the heck out of that toy all the way home in the car hahaha.
