morning after the Oscars

thor-coffee-jan2017Good morning!

What an ending at the Oscars! The Academy Awards seems so serious, even with a funny host and funny moments, so a mess up like that is just awesome. Well, not for La La Land of course, but shocking moments like those are for some reason fun to watch because it feels more real. Congratulations to Moonlight.

Justin Timberlake’s opening was really awesome too! I loved it! A perfect way to start, cause it gets the audience, nervous celebs and the viewers at home to lighten up before it all begins. Dance dance dance, it makes everybody happy:)

And congratulations to Swedish Linus Sandgren for Best Cinematography!

I’m tired today. The oscars finished an hour later than supposed to, as always, and I feel like I haven’t slept at all. But, I have a lot of things I want to do today, so I better get started:) I wish you an awesome week!

LION

Like every year, I’m excited about The Academy Awards tonight. I haven’t seen a lot of the movies that is being nominated, but it’s still fun to watch it. It wasn’t until I moved to NYC that I watched the oscars, and that’s only because of time difference, I couldn’t stay up all night long since I had school or work the next morning.

Awhile ago I took my husband to see the movie Moonlight, and that one is apparently up for several oscars. Yesterday we went to see the movie LION, which is up for a bunch of oscars as well. What a beautiful movie! The little boy, who btw had never seen a movie before he saw his own, is just amazing. Dev Patel’s part is a bit too long and a little boring but I guess they needed to make it long for him and Nicole Kidman to be up for nominations. The only one in that movie who deserves an Oscar is the little 8 year old Sunny Pawar, but he won’t get one.

Apparently a Swedish movie has two nominations, for Foreign Movie and Makeup. It’s fun that a small country like mine gets nominations. Last year The 100 Year Old Man got nominated, this year it’s A Man Called Ove. And of course Sweden is extra proud of Alicia Vikander who won Best Supporting Actress last year:)
I would be very disappointed if La La Land wins everything tonight just like on the Golden Globes. I haven’t watched it, so I shouldn’t actually say anything, but the little singing I’ve seen and heard is just absolutely terrible. There seems to be a lot better options of winners for all their nominations. Excited to see how it turns out.

Ferry to Staten Island

staten-island-ferry_aug2016_01Since we went to Staten Island last weekend, I thought I could share the experience me and my parents had when we took the ferry over in August 2016.

The ferry to Staten Island is free. It leaves downtown Manhattan every 30 minutes during the day. It takes about twenty five minutes and then you’re on the island. Many tourist choose to take the ferry to Staten Island to see the Statue of Liberty instead of paying for the boat to Liberty Island. It’s up to you if you’re ok with seeing the statue from a distance or if you want to see the lady up close.
Once you’re on the island, there is nothing to do. Really. Nothing to do. We walked around a little and then decided to get something to drink at a bar near the harbor. I asked the bartender if she could recommend anything to do there, and she basically just laughed at me. She told us that they are building a huge Ferris Wheel and in the future that could be the big attraction on the island. I read about it. They call it the “observation wheel” and I guess you will be able to get a great view of Manhattan. It’s supposed to be done in the spring of 2018.

After a drink, we walked a little bit more but found nothing, so we decided to take the next boat back. It was nice to take the boat, get a great view over Hudson River, but it’s not something you wanna do more than once.

To enjoy being alone

30-FannySura-2016

When I booked my ticket to go see Martha Graham Dance Company over a month ago, I decided that I wanted to go alone to this performance. I could have taken my husband or a friend, but I really wanted to go to this alone. This turned out to be an awesome decision.

I was early, like always, but it was nice to walk in, sit down and watch the video they had playing on the stage. The ticket I bought was the cheaper one in the front rows. I’ve had these seats before and I think they are great and for half the price, why not? Sitting there waiting, not having to see other people come in since they were behind me and to just watch this dance video made me build up the excitement of it all even more. During the performance I could really enjoy every single movement. I don’t talk during performances of course, but when you go with someone else you still have this feeling that you’re with someone, you feel their presence and your experience is not only yours, your friend is having the same one only just maybe a different interpretation of it. Now I was alone and I could get sucked in to the experience much more. My feelings and thoughts felt stronger and they were all mine.

In the intermission I enjoyed staying in my seat sitting in silence. This was an active choice, cause in a city like NYC (or anywhere else for that matter) it’s easy to start talking to random strangers, but I really wanted to be quiet. I said a few words to the people that handle my ticket and showed me my seat right when I came, but that’s it. Sure, I can be quiet at home, but it’s not the same when you’re in public. Although, I had my phone with me and I did send some texts which is kind of speaking in silence. My phone was on airplane mode for the most part, but I still checked in on my husband and puppy which I now think is stupid, I should have just had my phone off the whole time.
After the performance, I quickly got up and walked out. I didn’t want to look around to see if I knew anyone in the audience. I’ve gone to performances alone before in Stockholm, but I always end up meeting other dancers that I know. That doesn’t mean that I would have actually met someone at this place, cause there are a lot of dancers and people interested in art in NYC, but in this case I didn’t want to, so I just left in a hurry.

I don’t do things alone that often anymore. Living in Portugal or when I first came here I was doing stuff alone all the time. This city is not new to me anymore, there is not much to get excited about, so I’m hoping that when we move to Connecticut it will change again. Taking long walks not really knowing where you can end up, or visit new areas or cities, or, in this case, see a performance all by yourself, are things I really enjoy. And not looking on your phone the whole time is important, cause otherwise I feel like you’re still with other people through social media or in texts.
People are afraid to be alone, but I think it’s healthy to sometimes be without other people. You get to really feel, experience and enjoy things your way, not through someone else.

Martha Graham Dance Company

I finally went to a Martha Graham Dance Company performance!

Quality in dance performances is unfortunately not something I see that often anymore. To see this company in person was amazing. Dancers are so precise, choreographies are so well planned and the audience gets to go on a journey. This is what I love.

I went to see Program B, but last night they changed two of the four pieces. I don’t know the other pieces so I don’t care, I had just picked the evening that was best in my calendar. Anyway. The first piece, Primitive Mysteries, was an original from 1931. Very Graham. After first act out of three, a man behind me was snoring. If you’re not a dancer yourself and you don’t do your research on what the company does, then it might be hard to watch. But I thought it was great. A little long and not much going on, but the fact that this premiered in the 30s made it awesome.
The second piece, Diversions of Angels, felt, in my opinion, a little confusing. It was an old piece as well, from 1948. The dancers where having all sort of facial expressions which distracted the piece. The movements made it very clear on the story, but two-three dancers confused me a lot. Overly happy and really angry expressions at the same time on stage. I don’t think it was supposed to be like that….?
After the intermission they had a solo, Ekstasis (re-imagined from a piece from 1933). Omg, I loved this! The dancer, the same woman who had the main roll in the first piece, was so satisfying to watch. There was something with her and with the movements, which was awesome too, made the piece so enjoyable to watch and gave me lots of inspiration.
The last piece, Mosaic, is brand new (premiere Feb 15, 2017). Very different from the other three pieces. More of what you see on stages these days. Lots of movements, plenty of things going on at the same time, fast and slow, details and flexible, strong bodies. Everything that I enjoy choreographing myself. These dancers can really dance. It’s wonderful to see amazing dancers on stage.

I walked out of Joyce Theater feeling really inspired.
